Well, thats it for another year! Plastic Bat is closing for a much needed festive break - we'll be back on January 5th with a fantastic sale!

We're Back!!

8 weeks ago our beautiful daughter Cora arrived and I've had my hands full to say the least! Now that we've settled into a routine (and learned how to do most tasks one handed while holding the baby!!) I thought I'd get the website back up and running.

Stock is fairly limited at the moment but I'll be re-stocking over the next few weeks and hopefully adding some new designs too!

Christmas is coming!!

The snow just started falling in Dundee which means its almost Christmas!!! Now is the time to start hunting for the perfect gifts for your loved ones and what better than a little handmade something.

We've added a whole bunch of new things to fill those stockings with including the return of our Scented Gingerbread House Necklaces (see above). These are only available until Christmas so get the while they're hot!

Once all our Christmas orders are in, Plastic Bat HQ will be having a short break which means the website will be closed for orders from Dec 20th - Jan 5th so we can relax and enjoy the season.

Plastic Bat "World Tour"

SOooooo, at last I've found a moment to sit down and blog about last weekends craft fair "world tour". When I say world tour I actually mean Dundee and Edinburgh, but when you're lugging around the entire Plastic Bat stock room as well as assorted display items it begins to feel a bit like an epic trek!

Saturday September 11th - Dundee Jamboree at N_ilk

Saturday's amazing venue was the Botanical Gardens in Dundee for the N_ilk micro music festival. We were all squeezed up in a cute little log cabin in between the 2 music venues - perfect for passing trade!

I was sharing a table with the amazing Wooden Tree - see Mr Stag on the wall behind our table - he's mine now!! Next door on my other side was Sketch Stitch selling beautiful drawings, cards and other assorted pretty things. It was also great to meet a few familiar names from twitter including Iheartdotdotdot and Jolly Good to name but a few! Also big props go to Hilary Grant for the best ever display!

The crowd was great - really friendly and welcoming! There was a steady stream of people all night as well as teas, sandwiches and biscuits to keep spirits up!

Sadly I didn't really get a chance to have a wander to see any of the music acts and take photos but you can see a few here - The N_ilk Flickr Group

Big thanks go to Dundee Jamboree girls Nikki, Lauren and Jen for their hard work and fab organisational skills. We all felt very well looked after!

Sunday September 12th - Magpie Market at The LOT

Only just managed to drag myself out of bed on Sunday morning and hop on the bus to Edinburgh at 9am to get set up for Magpie Market. The LOT is a really great venue, we had a little more room to manouver this time which was nice and the day got off to a pretty good start. Overall it was a little quieter than the previous night but given how tired we were it was probably for the best! This time we were sandwiched in between Glitterysah and fellow weekend craft marathoner Jolly Good. Another good day but I was so glad when 5pm rolled around so we could head home for some much needed rest.

Thanks so much to Emily for taking time out of her duties at The Spider and the Fly to make it happen - I've applied for the following 3 monthly magpie markets so fingers crossed!

Made In The Shade

Hi all! We had a fab time this weekend - travelled through to Edinburgh to sell at Made In The Shade's Summertime Hop, it was an early start but totally worth it. Sold lots of things to some lovely people, met some fellow designers, ate amazing cake and even bought a few things for myself! Heres a few pics from the day. See my Flickr account for more!

Also, I've just opened the website again after the brief weekend closure and added a few new options - we now offer an eco friendly gift wrap option at the super low price of £1.50! The boxes are made from 70% recycled paper & are hand-stamped with waterbased inks :)

How cute are these?

As well as this, many of our best selling necklaces now come with a new choice of gold plated chain - we haven't offered it up until now due to the large variation in colour there can be with gold plating from different suppliers, this has now been remedied so you can now select this when you buy your item. More items will carry this option soon & photos will be added ASAP!

Long over due!

Sorry for the long pause between posts - its been a busy couple of months here!

All through May & the start of June I had my head down working on jewellery for a craft fair in Dundee only for it to be cancelled with 4 days notice! After that disappointment I decided to take a well earned & rare break from work of any kind :) This was followed by some worrying Guinea Pig vet visits where my lovely pig Trouble had to have an operation... so much of June was spent looking after the poorly pig (who is all mended now!).

So for the past couple of weeks now I've been working on stuff to take to my next craft event which is Made In The Shade's Summertime Hop in Edinburgh on July 24th, can't wait! Hope to see some of you there, in the meantime, heres a few photos from my time away from blogland!

Handmade Nation Film Screening

Obligatory shoe-gazing photo... but they are very nice!

Went to a screening of Handmade Nation by Faythe Levine last night at the DCA in Dundee which was fun! Dundee was only one of two locations screening the film in the UK which was a big surprise when I heard. I've been following progress since the early fund-raising & filming days so it was nice to finally see the finished product. Loads of crafty folks turned up from all over - a bus full of Glasgow people & even a few girls from Leeds. Unfortunately social skills are not my strong point so not much chatting from me but did get to hang out with Sandra from www.rubylovesred.com and Rachael from www.hannahzakari.co.uk for a while which was fun.
"Handmade Nation documents the new wave of art, craft and design that is capturing the attention of the nation. It is the feature film debut of director, author, artist and curator Faythe Levine. Levine traveled to 15 cities and covered more than 19,000 miles to interview artists, crafters, makers, curators and community members."
This film is a must see for all crafters, designers and artists looking to make a living from their work, its so inspiring to hear how far some people have gone since the early start up days.

Its wholesale central here at Plastic Bat HQ!! After a couple of quiet months several of our stockists placed orders at the same time so things are a little crazy here trying to keep on top of everything. Thought I'd take a little time out to make a quick photo post about goings on.

A HUGE box of fresh cut acrylic landed on my doorstep this morning!

Its always fun to look through everything to see all the individually bagged designs & colours, all still with their protective film on.

The Las Vegas signs take the longest to make as there are so many tiny letters to place individually. Its like a jigsaw really!

MArch of the multicoloured elephants! Some of these are special order colours for www.hannahzakari.co.uk - Who will soon have a real shop opening in Edinburgh! Also - our samples for new designs arrived this week so expect a preview very soon.

Eco-Friendly Christmas Wrap!

Looking for a cheap & eco friendly way to wrap your Christmas gifts?

What you need:

An old un-loved book, magazines, leaflets - any other paper
Thread
Sewing machine (or a steady hand if you have the time!)
Old VHS tapes (we all have them!!)

No need for instructions - just stitch the pages together in whatever way you please, I've used an old 1970s Peoples Friend Annual which has the kitschiest illustrations & story titles, along with some copies of 70s "Which" magazines.

Finish each parcel off with the VHS tape - you can tie a bow or leave the ends loose & curl up with your scissors edge.

Et voila! Pretty parcels!

Plastic Bat had its first craft fair experience this weekend! We had a great day meeting people, chatting & most importantly selling merchandise. Our stand got a great reaction from the visitors, especially children, who just loved our brightly coloured set up & fun jewellery.
